Panchkarma is an integral part of Ayurveda treatment. It is much more than just a body purification or detoxification process. Based on these five Karmas or procedures together with other accessory procedures like Abhyanga (Ayurveda style massage ) and Swedana ( Herbal steam treatment ) etc., we not only successfully treat a number of diseases but also work for promotion of health and longevity.

The Panchkarma Therapy includes: -

  • Snehana:

    • External Snehana (Abhyanga): - Ayurveda based massage with special medicated oils.

    • Internal Snehana: - Internal oil treatment through oral intake of oil or ghee based Ayurveda medicines.

  • Swedana (Herbal Steam Treatment): It includes various types of Swedana. Excessive perspiration for a limited period of time is achieved by subjecting the body to direct heat of boiled herbs or steam of herbs selected as per the personal requirement depending upon the Prakriti (constitution) of the patient and the disease. This is done in a specially designed wooden chamber.

              Swedana includes: -

    1. Sarvanga Sweda

    2. Nadi Sweda

    3. Patra Pinda Sweda

    4. Choorna Pinda Sweda

    5. Avagaha Sweda (Tub bath in decoction of herbs) etc.

Different steam treatments are especially useful in treating arthritis, other joint disorders, stiffness, rigidity and almost all neuromuscular disorders. Coupled with Abhyanga or Snehana, this is very effective in treating obesity and mental stress. It imparts a general feeling of relaxation and lightness to the body.

  • Shirodhara: -This is a procedure in which medicated oil is kept dripping in a steady stream on the forehead between the eyebrows of the person. This treatment is effective in the treatment of mental disorders, insomnia, loss of memory, chronic headache, hypertension, migraine and some disorders of eyes, ear, nose and throat.

  • Shirovasti: - In this procedure a specially prepared cylindrical leather cap is fitted on the head of the patient and the cap is filled with the indicated medicated oil. This statement has effects similar to Shirodhara.

  • Vamana (Emesis): - Vamana is induced by oral intake of decoction of herbal drugs after internal and external Snehana. This procedure is effective in treating some skin ailments, respiratory disorders, digestive disorders etc.

This is a specialized treatment for Kaphaj disorders.

  • Virechana (Purgation): - Virechana too is induced by oral intake of herbal drugs after internal and external Snehana. This procedure is effective in treating some types of chronic skin disorders, respiratory problems like Bronchial Asthma, Digestive disorders like Hyperacidity, Hypertension, Obesity, etc.

This is a specialized treatment for Pttaj disorders.

  • Basti (Medicated Enema): - This is an almost forgotten but a very effective type of treatment used by Ayurvedists of long ago. In this procedure enema of herbal decoctions or oil based herbal medicines are given to the patient.

This is the specialized treatment for Vataj disorders.

  • Nasyam: - In this procedure nasal drops of herbal medicines are put into the nostrils of the person after Snehana and Swedana of the head. This procedure is useful in treating a number of diseases of the ear, nose, throat and hair problems etc.

  • Raktamokshana (Blood Letting): - It is a unique procedure of Ayurveda in which the Doshas collected in the blood are eliminated by letting out the dushita (Vitiated) blood. A special type of leech (blood sucking) is employed in some cases.

These and some other procedures like Chakshutarpana etc. constitute the Panchkarma therapy.
