While visualizing the term
'Ayurveda', what
majority of us comprehend is
'Alternative
Medicine' or 'Herbal
Therapy’. These terms are however extremely
inadequate to describe 'Ayurveda'.
'Ayurveda'
is not just herbal (Botanical) medicines or the art of curing
diseases. Curing diseases is just a part of it. Broadly
speaking, it covers topics ranging from the evolution of
the Universe and its basic components, (Panchmahabhoot), the
Prakriti (constitution of the body), the self or the Atma to
smaller topics like the causes of the diseases, its cures,
ways of attaining a state of well-being and promoting health
and longevity.
Hence
Ayurveda is not just medicines or
therapy, it is a very ancient time tested science of life.
Promoting health and curing diseases is no doubt,
one of its main objectives.
Ayurveda
holds a close connection between the nature and the
human beings. Changes taking place in the nature are bound to
influence the health of the humans. However, adoption of
measures in conformity with nature cannot only prevent
diseases but also promote health.
The
Tridosha Doctrine
of Ayurveda has the potential of approaching
individuals in health and diseases in the most simple but
scientific manner. One simply wonders at the precision with
which even the most complex health problems can be explained
through various combinations and permutations of Vata,
Pitta, and Kapha of the body.
At
our institute, we treat various diseases like hypertension,
diabetes, digestive disorders, hyperacidity, respiratory
problems like bronchial asthma, joint problems, recurrent
colds and various others.
From
times immemorial, people of the east have been using herbal,
mineral and other drugs to treat a number of ailments
successfully. But the advent of modern medical science and the
long deep slumber of the ancient art has successfully wiped
out the realization of the effectiveness of this time tested
therapy to an extent that using herbs and other medicines of Ayurveda
was considered silly and even dangerous just a few decades
ago.
However
realization of its usefulness is returning at an unbelievable
pace. Not only the laymen but
physicians today realize and accept that botanicals and other
therapies of Ayurveda can provide volumes of lasting
improvement in many cases sometimes even above what
conventional medical treatment can achieve. And
this usually without the devastating and distressing side
effects of many prescribed medicines. The sudden high level of
consumer interest however calls for a
little caution. Natural
medicines or herbs and drugs of Ayurveda may not give optimum
results or may cause adverse effects if taken improperly or in
excess without the proper guidance of the experts of the
science.
‘Mind’
is considered one of the most important components of life and
health. It is the mind which governs or determines the health
and the disease status of the individual as well as that of
the society to a very large extent. It is this approach of the
ancient science that makes it holistic. The deep insight in
the realm of the mind successfully enables us to manage a
large variety of the so called Psychosomatic disorders.
Growing mental stress in this exceedingly progressive world of
our is known to play an important role in a number of present
day ailments like heart diseases, hypertension, allergies,
cancer, diabetes etc., the list could be much more lengthy. Yoga
and meditation which are integral parts of Ayurveda go a long
way in controlling not only these stress borne diseases but
other diseases also.
